I have had the same problem. The key is to keep the child's head steady. Have your child lie on his or her back with head facing straight up. Steady the head with your hand (or have someone else do it).
Place the drops right next to the tear duct of the eyelids, close to the upper nose area. It doesn't matter if the child's eyes are opened, just wait--eventually the eyes will open. When the child opens his or her eye, the drops will partially roll in.
