When I moved to Montreal, I had to change my dentist. Every time when I go for my regular check up the assistant brings me right away into the x-ray chamber. She tells me the doctor needs an up to date x-ray to evaluate my teeth’s condition. At this time neither she nor the doctor has had look at my teeth, did not ask me if I had any pain or a loose filling or if I might be pregnant!   

Now, since Röntgen, Becquerel and Curie we all know radiation. And despite our advanced technology nowadays, which is quiet precise and minimises the risks of radiation any reasonable doctor will tell you to avoid unnecessary exposure to radiation. Let alone the serious risk for the foetus in case of pregnancy.    

At my dentist, I always refuse to have an x-ray done, unless I have pain, and the dentist cannot detect the reasons with a physical examination.     I know that x-ray equipment is expensive and obviously my dentist tries to amortise his as quick as possible. But not over my health!   

I strongly advise you to question your dentist for every x-ray he wants to perform on you!
